Media Arts

Photography · Video · Visual Storytelling · Creative Media

See. Create. Tell Your Story.

Media is more than learning how to use a camera or edit a video. It is a way of seeing, thinking, creating, and communicating.

The Media Arts Program at M+ Creative Arts Studio introduces students to photography, video production, visual storytelling, digital media, and creative communication through a highly practical and project-based learning experience.

Students begin with the foundations of visual language—light, composition, colour, space, texture, perspective, and visual narrative—and gradually learn how to transform ideas, observations, and everyday experiences into meaningful photographs, videos, short documentaries, and multimedia projects.

Rather than focusing only on technical skills or software, the program encourages students to develop creative thinking, visual awareness, storytelling ability, and an individual artistic voice.

Media Arts

Media Arts

  • Mood Board

02

Video & Visual Storytelling

Students move from still images into moving-image storytelling and learn how to develop an idea into a complete visual story.

Topics include:

  • Camera fundamentals

  • A-roll and B-roll

  • Interview techniques

  • Lighting for video

  • Sound and music

  • Story development

  • Visual sequencing

  • Video editing

  • Short-form video

  • Mini documentary

  • Short film production

Students have opportunities to create both individual and collaborative video projects, including short documentaries and narrative films.

04

Portfolio, Exhibition & Media Presentation

Creating the work is only part of being an artist and media creator. Students also learn how to select, organize and present their work.

Projects may include:

  • Portfolio development

  • Artist Introduction

Learning Through Practice

This is a studio- and project-based program.

Students learn through a combination of instruction, demonstration, research, discussion and, most importantly, hands-on creative practice.

Classes may take place not only in the studio but also in parks, streets, galleries, cultural spaces, community events and other real-world environments.

Students are encouraged to observe the world around them, experiment with different approaches, collaborate with others, develop original concepts and gradually build a body of work that reflects their own interests and creative identity.

The goal is not simply to make technically correct photographs or videos.

The goal is to learn how to see—and how to turn what you see into a story.

Photography · Film · Media Arts · Visual Communication · Digital Media · Design

目前,Charles 为加拿大 University of New Brunswick(新不伦瑞克大学)艺术教育博士候选人(PhD Candidate in Art Education)。

Instructor: Charles Pan

Artist · Media Arts Educator · Photographer · Filmmaker

Charles Pan is an artist, media arts educator, photographer, and filmmaker whose interdisciplinary practice spans media and communication, photography, film and video production, visual arts, arts education, and community-based creative practice.

Before beginning his career in arts education in Canada, Charles spent more than two decades working professionally in media in China. His experience encompassed broadcasting, journalism, television, media production and management, as well as photography, visual storytelling, writing and scripting, and large-scale cultural and arts projects. During this period, works he contributed to and led received more than 40 national and provincial professional media awards, including major Chinese broadcasting and television awards and the Five-One Project Award.

After moving to Canada in 2014, Charles continued his studies at Sheridan College, where he pursued postgraduate studies in New Media and Advanced Television and Film. During this period, he participated in and produced a number of documentary and moving-image projects. In 2018, he was invited as a keynote speaker for TIFF × Sheridan’s “NextGen: Catalyst for Change in Canadian Storytelling,” sharing his perspectives and experience in media, filmmaking, and storytelling in Canada.

From 2018 to 2026, Charles taught Media Arts & Visual Communication at McKenzie College, where he guided students in photography, video production, visual storytelling, creative projects, portfolio development, and graduation exhibition practice.

Charles is currently a PhD Candidate in Art Education at the University of New Brunswick. During his doctoral studies and research, he has worked closely with art educator Dr. Mary Blatherwick, exploring visual arts, visual language, creativity, and arts education while connecting educational theory with his extensive experience in media arts and creative practice.

Across his work in professional media, visual arts, filmmaking, and education, one question has remained central to his practice:

How do we see the world—and how do we express what we see?

Charles believes that Media Arts education should go far beyond teaching cameras, equipment, and software. Technology is a tool; what matters most is helping students learn to:

Observe · Think · Imagine · Create · Express

Through sustained creative practice, research, experimentation, and real-world artistic experiences, students are encouraged to develop visual awareness, creative thinking, and an independent voice—and ultimately to discover their own visual language.

His teaching therefore emphasizes creative practice, personal expression, visual storytelling, and learning through real-world experience, helping students move beyond simply “taking pictures” or “making videos” toward becoming thoughtful creators who can think visually and tell meaningful stories through images.
