Charles Pan brings more than two decades of professional experience in broadcasting, television, language arts, and media communication. Beginning his broadcasting career during China’s transition toward live, professionalized broadcasting in the early 1990s, he has worked extensively in live radio and television hosting, literary editing, program development, interviewing, journalism, narration, and the performance of literary and artistic works. His experience spans broadcasting, literary recitation, narrative voice, stage language, and public speaking.

Throughout his broadcasting career, Charles specialized particularly in programs related to literature, music, drama, and the arts, working as an editor, creator, producer, and broadcaster. His broadcasting and media productions received numerous major national and provincial professional awards in China. Works in which he participated as a literary editor, creator, and voice artist contributed to the careers of two recipients of China’s prestigious Golden Microphone Award; Charles himself was also nominated for the Golden Microphone Award as one of the two performers of a co-narrated work. His creative work has received recognition across broadcasting, journalism, literature, music, and drama.

This interdisciplinary background shaped an understanding of language that extends far beyond pronunciation and broadcasting technique. Charles emphasizes textual understanding, literary sensitivity, rhythm, vocal characterization, emotional expression, narrative style, and the relationship between language, literature, music, theatre, and visual media. From reading and interpreting a text to editing, adaptation, sound design, and final performance, he brings extensive first-hand creative experience to language education.

Charles has also been actively involved in literary and theatrical creation. His stage play, Cello in the Night (《夜色中的大提琴》), directed by Professor Jiang Zejin, was staged multiple times by students and performers from the Communication University of China and other arts institutions. These experiences further developed his understanding of how written language can become voice, character, emotion, narrative, and theatrical expression.

From professional broadcast studios to theatre stages, and from poetry and prose to news, interviews, hosting, documentary, and digital storytelling, Charles has spent decades exploring how language changes across different media. A single passage of Chinese can take on entirely different rhythms, emotions, and expressive qualities when it becomes a poem, story, speech, broadcast, dramatic performance, or film narrative.

From Professional Language Arts to Living Chinese Expression

At Langson Mandarin, we bring this professional experience into contemporary Chinese-language learning.

Designed primarily for youth while also welcoming adults and families, the program goes beyond Mandarin pronunciation to explore classic literature, literary interpretation, recitation, storytelling, public speaking, hosting, and confident expression. Traditional language arts are also connected with contemporary media through interviews, recording, podcasts, short videos, and digital storytelling—bringing Chinese beyond the textbook and into everyday Canadian life, community, and culture.

Family reading and recitation are an important part of the program. Parents, children, siblings, and other family members are encouraged to read classics together, share literature, perform different roles, tell family stories, and collaborate on audio, stage, or digital-media projects.

We hope Chinese can become more than a language children are expected to “study.” It can once again become a living language through which families read together, listen to one another, share memories, express emotions, and understand their cultural heritage.
