Over a Decade of Interdisciplinary Arts Practice

The development of M+ Creative Arts Studio is built upon more than a decade of arts education, stage production, public cultural programming, and community-based creative practice in Canada led by founder Charles Pan, together with collaborating artists and educators.

From music education, choral work, and stage performance to visual arts, literary recitation, photography, filmmaking, and public expression, we have always believed that art should extend beyond the classroom and the stage. It should enter communities, connect cultures, and help children, youth, and adults discover their own voices and develop more confident, meaningful, and creative ways of expressing themselves.

Music, Arts & Community Practice

Over the past decade, our team has produced, curated, and participated in a wide range of music and community arts projects, including:

• Presenting Xiaoping Hu’s Genesis Concert;

• Presenting three consecutive concert series at the Beaverbrook Art Gallery, featuring choral music, vocal ensembles, and music rooted in Eastern traditions;

• Presenting By the Water (Zai Shui Yi Fang), an erhu recital at Mount Allison University, Gallery on Queen, and other cultural venues;

• Presenting Blossoming Tune – A Journey Through Chinese Piano Melodies at Charlotte Street Arts Centre in Fredericton, featuring guest artist Dr. Roger Lord, pianist and former Head of the Department of Music at Université de Moncton;

• Creating and presenting the multidisciplinary concert Echoes of Fundy Bay at the Fredericton Playhouse, bringing together Asian communities and artists from across Atlantic Canada. Through music, storytelling, multimedia, and cross-cultural stage expression, the production explored experiences of life in Atlantic Canada and received coverage from CBC, People’s Daily Overseas Edition, Phoenix Media, and other Chinese- and English-language media;

• In music education and community service, choirs organized and directed by our team have participated in the Fredericton Christmas Music Festival and received First Place in the World Music category at the Fredericton Music Festival. We have also organized student charity concerts, donating ticket proceeds to community organizations including the Fredericton Community Kitchen.

Our music practice is not only about beautiful sound and strong technical foundations. We also value the relationship between music, everyday life, community, and social responsibility.

Through music, we hope young people learn to express themselves and discover how the arts can help them participate in a diverse society with greater confidence, empathy, and a sense of responsibility.

Visual Arts & Youth Creative Platforms

Our team initiated and continues to develop the Atlantic International Youth Art Festival, bringing together professors, artists, and educators from Canadian higher education, arts education, and creative fields to mentor young artists and create a visual arts platform with an international perspective for youth from Asian and diverse cultural backgrounds.

Youth artworks have been exhibited at venues including:

• Charlotte Street Arts Centre

• Mississauga Living Arts Centre

• Other community arts spaces and public cultural venues

Our team has also curated and participated in a range of visual arts and interdisciplinary exhibitions, including:

• The Odyssey: Multimedia Memories of Immigration

• The Beauty of Asian Patterns

• The Beauty of Asian Traditions

Related exhibitions and arts events have taken place at Queen Elizabeth Park Community and Cultural Centre in Oakville, multicultural arts spaces in New Brunswick, Gallery on Queen, and the McMichael Canadian Art Collection, among other cultural institutions.

These programs have welcomed museum leaders, curators, artists, and arts education specialists as speakers, panelists, and professional advisors, including Ian A. C. Dejardin, former Executive Director of the McMichael Canadian Art Collection; arts educator Dr. Mary Blatherwick; and Nadia Khoury, founder and curator of Gallery on Queen.

Our visual arts programs are supported by professional artists and educators working across diverse disciplines, including:

• Heng “Andrew” Yang — Canadian-based painter and arts educator, currently Vice President of SA Institute in Montreal and a board member of the Atlantic Creative Centre (ACC);

• Bu Dou — interdisciplinary artist whose practice encompasses painting, performance, moving image, and experimental art;

• Dr. Mary Blatherwick — arts education scholar and higher education educator;

• Emily Hare and other emerging young artists who have developed through local arts education programs.

Through professional exhibitions, festivals, courses, and public dialogue, we want young people's work to be more than simply “displayed.” We want it to enter genuine artistic conversations and become part of the broader cultural life of the community.

Stage Production & Cross-Cultural Public Performance

Charles Pan has served eight times as Director or Artistic Director of the Mississauga Chinese Arts Organization’s Chinese New Year Gala, contributing to its development as one of the notable Chinese cultural and arts events in the Greater Toronto Area.

Other major stage and public cultural projects include:

• Serving as Artistic Director of Huayi Fashion Night – Toronto;

• Serving as Artistic Director of a major multidisciplinary performance during Asian Heritage Month in New Brunswick, bringing together more than ten Asian communities;

• Developing public stage projects integrating music, theatre, moving image, literary storytelling, and multicultural expression;

• Receiving recognition and award nominations for cross-community cultural and artistic practice.

These projects bring together participants from different cultural backgrounds, generations, and artistic disciplines, using the stage as a space for public dialogue where music, stories, and cultural memories can meet through collaborative creation.

Photography, Media Arts & Public Storytelling

Charles Pan has worked extensively across broadcasting, film and television, literature, music, traditional theatre, photography, and digital media. His work has received more than 40 national-level and professional awards and recognitions in broadcasting, journalism, literature, music, and theatre, including the Five-One Project Award, China Journalism Award, national broadcasting and hosting awards, and nominations associated with the Golden Microphone Awards.

During the 2018 Toronto International Film Festival, he was invited to participate in the TIFF × Sheridan “Next Generation Storytelling” forum as a featured keynote speaker, sharing his perspectives on cross-media storytelling, cultural communication, and the future of visual storytelling.

Through six years of teaching core courses and participating in public arts practice at local universities and arts colleges, including the University of New Brunswick and McKenzie College of Art and Design, the team presented student photography exhibitions for five consecutive years at cultural and arts venues in the Moncton–Dieppe region.

Through courses in photography, video production, digital storytelling, and new media, students were encouraged to observe their communities, document everyday life, and develop their own visual languages.

Our Media Arts curriculum extends beyond photography and video production techniques. It also emphasizes:

• Visual observation and composition;

• Interviewing, writing, and vocal expression;

• Digital storytelling and documentary narrative;

• Stage visuals and event documentation;

• Community memory and public cultural communication;

• New media content development and production.
